Kew houses and the bathrooms they usually have
In the Victorian and Edwardian houses around Kew Gardens station the bathroom is often on the half-landing or in the rear addition, with a timber floor, the soil pipe outside and sometimes a separate WC next door that can be joined to make one useful room. Many of these houses have been extended into the loft, so the main bathroom no longer has to be the only one and can be planned for comfort rather than throughput. The inter-war semis towards North Sheen have a squarer bathroom at the top of the stairs with more freedom to move fittings. In the older houses around Kew Green, original floorboards, panelling and sash windows next to the room are protected during the strip-out.

Original floorboards on the landing and the stained-glass window are protected throughout, and the new floor is levelled before tiling.

Conservation areas, skips and parking in Kew
Richmond Council publishes conservation area statements including Kew Gardens, Kew Green and Kew Road. Internal work of this kind is not normally affected by conservation area status. The exception is any change to the outside of the building, such as a new window, rooflight, flue or vent, which is checked against the individual address. Where the street is in a controlled parking zone, Richmond Council suspends the bay for a skip or deliveries on ten working days' notice, with an administration fee and a daily charge per bay that varies by zone (council suspension page). Budget and timescale for a Kew bathroom
